Borbély Emesével, a Taita Alapítvány elnökével beszélgettünk Afrikáról, az alapítványuk által 2006 óta támogatott kenyai Szent József Árvaházról. Nagyinterjú.

– Az istenek a fejükre estek című filmet hányszor látta életében?

– Ritkán nézek filmet, de gyerekként ezt jó néhányszor láttam. Megfogott a busmanok világa és persze az állatok is.

– Miért éppen Afrikában támogatja az árvákat és nem mondjuk Ázsiában, vagy akár Csángóföldön?

– A világ számos pontján szükség van segítségre, legyen az anyagi vagy erkölcsi. Én hiszem, és ezt is tapasztalom, hogy a világon megvan arra a lehetőség, hogy különféle helyeken segíthessünk. A Taita az én döntésem volt. Egyetemista éveim alatt találkoztam még a kenyai apácákkal, és rögtön megtetszett a munkájuk. Szerettem volna helyben megtapasztalni, hogyan működik Afrikában egy apácák által vezetett árvaház. Itthon is sokat foglalkoztam állami gondozott gyerekekkel, akiknek az „átlagos” fiatalokhoz képest, család és szociális háló nélkül, sokkal nehezebb boldogulni, beilleszkedni a társadalomba. Arra voltam kíváncsi, hogyan működhet ez egy a magyarnál sokkal szegényebb társadalomban, ahol a nővérek az életüket teszik fel a gyerekek nevelésére...

We had a conversation with Emese Borbély, the chairwoman of Taita Foundation, about Africa, and the St Joseph Orphanage in Kenya that their foundation supports. Full interview.

– How many times have you seen the movie The Gods Must Be Crazy?

– I rarely ever watch movies but I’ve seen this one a good many times. I was captivated by the Bushmens’ world, and of course, by the animals, as well.

– Why support the orphans in Africa, of all places, and not Asia, for example, or even in the Csángó-land?

– Help is needed in a lot of spots all over the world, whether it be the material or the moral kind. I do believe, and duly experience, that in the world, we have the opportunity to help in various places. Taita was my decision. Already during my university years, I met the Kenyan nuns and immediately felt drawn to their work. I desired to experience on the very spot how an orphanage that is led by nuns operates in Africa. At home, I also regularly looked after children in state care who, without families and social networks, had a much harder time to thrive, to adapt to society, compared to “average” young people. I was curious how this might work in a society much poorer than Hungary, where the sisters put their life on the line to raise the children...

2019 februárjában egy hatalmas szívű, tettre kész, elszánt fiatal lány lépett Afrika földjére, hogy a Taita Alapítvány képviseletében törődést, gondoskodást, szeretetet juttasson oda, ahol igen nagy szükség van rá. Anna egészen apró kora óta szívén viseli az árvák, elesettek, nélkülözők, magukra hagyottak sorsát, így szívbéli vágyától hajtva csatlakozott az Alapítvány munkájához Burában, a St. Joseph Árvaházban. Megérkezése óta aktívan részt vesz a gyermekek mindennapi életében, gondozásában, örömöt és reményt sugározva kicsiknek és nagyoknak egyaránt.

Míg ő Kenyában teljesít szolgálatot, addig én, a büszke édesanyja az Alapítvány itthoni munkájában vállaltam önkéntesi feladatokat. Legutóbb az Afrika Expón lehetett találkozni a Taita Alapítvánnyal, ahol lelkes, segítő szándékú és elkötelezett önkéntesek hada várta az oda látogatókat.

Sokakban vetődhet fel a kérdés: miért épp Afrika? Miért hazánktól távol tevékenykedünk, amikor itt is nagy szükség van minden segítségre? Azt gondolom, hogy a támogatás, törődés, segítségnyújtás mára világszintű feladatunkká vált. Önkénteseink jelentős része vállal szerepet hazai szervezetekben is, de nem csukhatjuk be szemünket és szívünket egyetlen szükségben lévő embertársunk előtt sem, bárhol is él ezen a világon.

A Föld az otthonunk, a szeretet határtalan. Martin Luther King üzenetével bátorítok mindenkit az országhatárok átlépésére, és bolygónk egészéért való felelősségvállalásra:

"Segítsünk másokon! Mert mások is mi vagyunk."

In February 2019, a young girl with a huge heart, determined, ready for action, stepped onto Africa’s soil, to bring care, provision, and love to a place where it is very much needed. From a very tender age, Anna has taken the fate of orphans, the afflicted, the destitute and the abandoned to heart, and thus, driven by her heart’s desire, she joined the Foundation’s work in the St Joseph Orphanage of Bura. Since her arrival, she has been actively involved in the children’s everyday life and their care, radiating joy and hope toward the younger and older children alike.

While she fulfills her volunteer service in Kenya, I, as her proud mother, undertook volunteering tasks in the Foundation’s job here at home. The latest event the Taita Foundation appeared at was the ’Afrika Expo’, where a whole army of enthusiastic volunteers expected the visitors, devoted and ready to help.

The question might arise in many people: why exactly Africa? Why are we active far away from our home, when we are in a great need of help here, as well? I think that by now, support, care for others and offering help has become a worldwide task for us. A significant number of our volunteers undertake roles in organizations here at home, as well, but we can’t close our eyes to any single fellow human in need, wherever they live in this world.

Earth is our home, love is boundless. With Martin Luther King’s message, I encourage everybody to cross country borders and take responsibility for the whole of our planet.

“Let’s help others! Because others are us, too!”

Végvári Lilla vagyok, már második éve segítek önkéntesként a Taita Alapítványnak különböző rendezvények alkalmával, így többek között az Afrika Expón is részt vettem. Egy kolléganőm réven ismerkedtem meg az alapítvány tevékenységével, rögtön lecsaptam a lehetőségre, és jelentkeztem önkéntesnek hozzájuk.

Érdeklődésem Afrika iránt még gyerekkoromban kezdődött. Elsősorban a kontinens élővilága vonzott. Az ott élő állatokról képes voltam minden dokumentumfilmet megnézni, amit vetítettek. Később aztán ez az érdeklődés átterjedt a kultúrára és az emberekre is. Tanulmányaim során (nemzetközi tanulmányok, történelem szak) is kiemelt figyelmet szenteltem a térségnek a Közel-Kelettel együtt, és egyre inkább kezdtem látni, hogy mekkora ára van/volt a nyugati (európai) ember jólétének. Éppen ezért gondolom úgy, hogy közösen kell tennünk azért, hogy az ottani emberek a szülőföldjükön tudjanak boldogulni, és ne kényszerüljenek olyan drasztikus lépésekre, mint annak elhagyása. A különböző Afrika témájú rendezvények színes forgataga mindig remek lehetőséget nyújt arra, hogy közelebb hozza a két világot egymáshoz, és hogy megismerjük a témával foglalkozó alapítványok és szervezetek munkáját, és személyesen találkozzunk az adományozókkal és az érdeklődőkkel. Sokféle ember fordul meg ilyenkor a standunknál sokféle szándékkal. Van, aki csak egy kis ajándékot keres a családjának vagy magának, van, aki célirányosan érkezik, szintén hasonló önkéntes tapasztalattal a háta mögött és szívesen megosztja velünk ezeket. De szinte mindenki érdeklődéssel fogadja lelkes beszámolónkat a Taita Alapítvány munkájáról, a gyerekek mindennapi életéről, és arról, hogy hová kerül, és adott esetben például mit fedez az adománya. Nagyon sikeresek szoktak lenni ezek a napok. Az itt összegyűjtött pénzt elsősorban étkezésre, orvosi ellátásra és oktatásra fordítják, valamint természetesen arra, hogy a sok nehézség közepette mégis valódi otthont és a lehető legszebb gyermekkort biztosítsák az ott lakók számára.

Mindenképpen szeretnék a közeljövőben önkéntesként én is hosszabb időt eltölteni Afrikában, és bevallom, vannak önző okaim is... Úgy érzem, hogy van valami, amit csak ott tud megtanulni és megtapasztalni az ember. Még nem tudom pontosan mi az, de arról is biztosan írni fogok pár sort.

I am Lilla Végvári; I have been volunteering for the Taita Foundation on the occasion of various events for two years now; among others, I also participated in ’Afrika Expo’. I got acquainted with the foundation’s activities through a colleague of mine, so I instantly grabbed the opportunity and registered with them to be a volunteer.

My interest in Africa had already started during my childhood. I was mainly attracted to the continent’s flora and fauna. I had no problem with watching every single documentary movie that was broadcast. Then later, this interest expanded to include culture and people, as well. Also, during my studies (international studies, history major), I paid particular attention to this region, together with the Near East, and it became more and more obvious to me what a huge price the Western peoples’ wellbeing costs. And that is exactly why I think that we have to act together to let African people thrive in their homeland instead of being forced to commit drastic measures such as leaving it behind. The colorful hustle and bustle of various African-themed events always offers a great opportunity to bring the two worlds closer to one another, and to get acquainted with the foundations and organizations involved with these matters, as well as giving us a chance to meet with the patrons and the people interested. On such occasions, all kinds of people frequent our booth, with all kinds of intentions. Some of them are only looking for a little gift for their family or themselves, some of them arrive with a clear purpose, with similar volunteering experiences in their past, just like us, and they are more than happy to share these experiences with us. One thing is for sure, almost everyone welcomes our enthusiastic accounts on the work of the Taita Foundation, the children’s everyday life and where the donations end up or possibly what they cover. These days are usually very successful. The money gathered here is primarily employed for meals, medical care and education, and of course, amid all the difficulties, on providing a real home and the most beautiful childhood possible for the residents living there.

I would like to spend an extended time in Africa in the near future, by all means – and I have to admit I have some selfish reasons for that... I feel like there is something that one can only experience and learn there. I don’t know what that is yet, but I’ll surely write a few lines about it, as well.

Régi álmom, hogy önkéntes munkát végezhessek Afrikában, 2018. szeptemberében megvalósult. Négy hónapot töltöttem a Szent József Gyermekotthonban, amely időszak tagadhatatlanul eddigi életem legmeghatározóbb élménye lett.
A gyerekek kitörő örömmel fogadtak, persze az én lelkesedésem sem volt kisebb az övéknél.

Fantasztikus élményekkel gazdagodtam; voltunk safarizni, hegyet másztunk és kirándultunk, rengeteget játszottunk együtt. A mindennapi rutinjukat is megismertem: napfelkelte előtt ébredtünk, elkísértem őket az iskolába, majd napközben a legkisebbekkel rajzoltunk, mondókáztunk, énekeltünk. Délután következett a leckeírás és az esti imádság, amelyre mindenki összegyűlt, hogy teli torokból szólhassanak a dalok a dobszó kíséretében. Elalvás előtt pedig mesét mondtam, így kalandoztunk el a nap végén gondolatban a perzselő szavannára, vagy éppen a hófödte Budapestre.

Kenyában a tanév október végén ér véget, ekkor kezdődik a bő két hónapos szünet, amely az új év elejéig tart. Ezidő alatt sokat jártunk a környék focipályáira, de a játék mellett a gyerekek a házkörüli munkából is lelkiismeretesen kivették a részüket. Nehéz szívvel mondtam búcsút januárban a burai árvaház lakóinak, a tömérdek szép emléket pedig, amely kenyai utam során ért, soha nem fogom elfelejteni, és bízom benne, hogy a jövőben egyszer újra meglátogathatom a gyerekeket.

One of my oldest dreams, namely to do volunteering in Africa, was realized in September 2018. I spent four months in the Saint Joseph Orphanage, and this period undoubtedly became the most determining experience of my life so far.
The children welcomed me with unbridled joy; of course, my enthusiasm wasn’t any less than theirs.

Fantastic experiences enriched me: we went on safaris, climbed mountains and went hiking, we played a lot together. I also learned their everyday routine: we awoke before dawn, I accompanied them to school, then during the day, we drew, recited rhymes and sang together with the youngest ones. In the afternoon, their pending homework awaited, then the evening prayer, for which everybody gathered together, so that the songs could resound, accompanied with the beat of the drum. And before they went to sleep, I told them tales, that was how we imaginatively ventured out to the scorching savanna, or even to snow-covered Budapest.

In Kenya, the schoolyear finishes at the end of October; that’s when the more than the two-month-long holiday begins, which lasts until the beginning of the new year. During this time, we frequently visited the neighborhood’s football fields, but besides the games, the children conscientiously took their share of work around the house, as well. I said goodbye to the residents of the Bura orphanage with a heavy heart, forever cherishing the abundance of beautiful memories that I gathered during my trip to Kenya, and hoping that in the future, I’ll get the chance again to visit the children again.

Három hónapot töltöttünk kint a burai árvaházban és biztos, hogy soha nem fogjuk elfelejteni. Nagyszerű érzés volt látni azt a sok szeretetet, amit a nehéz helyzetük ellenére a gyerekek kaptak egymástól és a gondviselőiktől. Az első pillanattól kezdve szívesen fogadtak minket és sokszor úgy viselkedtek mintha ők lennének itt azért, hogy ránk figyeljenek és nem fordítva.

Eleinte furcsa volt belecsöppenni a mindennapjaikba, de szerencsére hamar sikerült felvenni a ritmusukat. Rengeteget játszottunk velük, de igazából az, hogy mit csináltunk másodlagos volt, az volt a fontos, hogy figyeljünk rájuk és szeressük őket, ami viszont nagyon könnyű volt.

We spent three months in the Bura Orphanage and we are sure we’ll never forget this time. It was a wonderful feeling to experience all the love that the children gave to each other and received from their caretakers. From the first moment on, they welcomed us, and sometimes they behaved as though they were there to take care of us, instead of the other way around.

Initially, it was weird to drop into their everyday life, but luckily, we managed to pick up their rhythm soon enough. We played a lot with them, but actually what we did was secondary; the main thing was to pay attention to them and love them, which was really very easy.
